Finding a Little Piece of Home in Venice, Italy

Sometimes I think it is naive to believe that "you are exactly where you are supposed to be" or that "everything happens for a reason." Other times, however, the universe convinces me that I might actually be in the right place at the right time.

There have been so many sweet little signs in my life that I do not think are coincidental.

One of my favorites came from this past summer while I was on my first trip as a tour guide. One of my coworkers, Lyndi, and I took about 20 students to Venice, Italy, for the day. It had been almost two weeks since I had arrived in Italy. I was starting to feel a little homesick but wanted to be fully present in Venice that day. Traveling to the floating city had always been a dream of mine.

Lyndi and I had just let the students go after a glassblowing demonstration for a few hours of free time. So we headed to a restaurant on the water for lunch and a glass of wine.

After we were finished, we had a little bit of time to walk around and do some shopping. Lyndi wanted new gym clothes, so we walked into the Champion store.

On one of the very first racks in the store, there were multiple UNC sweatshirts and sweatpants! Why in the world was there UNC apparel in the Champion store in Venice, Italy?! There was no other college apparel. I asked one of the ladies that worked at the store why they were carrying this stuff, and she had no idea. She said, "I am not sure, we just set out what we are sent."

7,000 miles away from Chapel Hill, I found a little piece of home. Call me naive, but it reassured me that I was right where I was supposed to be living and working in Italy.

With love,

MLC
